Jim Ericson at Information Management writes about DynamoDB – Amazon's new Big Data service here: http://www.information-management.com/news/Amazon_big_data_cloud-10021812-1.html. Worth a quick read. DynamoDB builds on SimpleDB, and Ericson writes that "since it is a non-traditional database, DynamoDB will face a limited audience that the company hopes will grow as the service is approached and tested." One thing about the so-called NoSQL Big Data databases is that they are simple to use and very powerful. The challenge is to use these within the existing IT landscape. Both Cloudera and Microsoft are promoting ODBC drivers as the way to bridge between the SQL and NoSQL worlds. I think this is a good idea but one that needs more than the basic ODBC that these folks are touting.
