I am at the Microsoft SQL Server PASS conference this week and the big news today was Microsoft's announcement that they are supporting Hadoop. So, how is Microsoft supporting Big Data? Through ODBC of course. Specifically, Microsoft will introduce an ODBC driver for Hive (the Hadoop query engine) on Windows. This should be released next year. It is interesting because other Simba customers including Teradata Aster Data use Simba's technology to provide ODBC drivers. As much as Big Data and the Cloud are interesting, at the end of the day, you still need to connect applications and data sources and you need to connect to the desktop. For 20 years, ODBC has been a standard of connectivity and in the world of Big Data and Cloud, ODBC continues to be the most widely used data connectivity interface.
