SAN MATEO, September 25, 2012 – Simba Technologies, the industry’s Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) expert for Big Data solutions, has joined the Apache Drill project with a commitment to develop an ODBC driver for Drill. The ODBC driver will allow users to explore large datasets in Hadoop, HBase, and others, with business intelligence (BI) tools, allowing companies to realize the dream of interactive analysis of large-scale datasets.
Apache Drill is an open source project inspired by Google’s Dremel, which is developing a distributed system for interactive analysis of large-scale datasets.
Simba and Microsoft co-developed the ODBC standard in 1992. It is the foundation for standards-based access from BI tools such as Alteryx, Microsoft Excel, Tableau, and Crystal Reports to Big Data sources such as Google BigQuery, Cassandra, Hadoop / Hive, MongoDB and others. Today, Simba’s ODBC toolkit, SimbaEngine ODBC SDK, is used by ISVs world-wide to develop custom ODBC, JDBC, ADO.NET and OLE DB drivers for relational and non-relational data sources.
“Simba has worked with a number of market innovators such as MapR, DataStax, HortonWorks and others to develop Big Data ODBC drivers for various NoSQL data sources,” said George Chow, Simba’s CTO. “We are excited to apply our ODBC expertise and technology to develop a Big Data ODBC driver for Apache Drill, which will provide users with low-latency, standards-based access and analytics.”

“Drill brings low-latency SQL to Hadoop, HBase and other NoSQL technologies and has huge momentum within the open source community,” said Tomer Shiran, a founding member of the Apache Drill project and an employee of MapR Technologies. “We’re pleased that Simba will be working with the community to make ODBC part of the Drill ecosystem.”
