This week, Tableau just released version 8.0.4 of their namesake product. One key feature is that Tableau now supports connecting to Hive Hadoop using HiveServer2. According to Ted Wasserman on the Tableau blog, “Also new in Tableau 8.0.4 is the ability to connect to HiveServer2 through our supported Hadoop vendors (Cloudera, Hortonworks, and MapR). HiveServer2 provides a more reliable, secure, and robust connection experience to Hadoop. To take advantage of this new functionality, customers must download the latest Hive ODBC drivers from our Hadoop partners as well as Tableau 8.0.4.”

The fact is that all of Cloudera, Hortonworks, and MapR get their ODBC drivers from Simba. So, when you download the ODBC driver for any of the Cloudera, Hortonworks or MapR Hadoop distributions, you get the Simba Apache Hive ODBC Driver with SQL Connector.  This means that Tableau is certified with the Simba Hive ODBC driver.  Since the Simba Hive ODBC driver works with *ANY* Apache Hadoop distribution, then Tableau using Simba ODBC will also work with any Hadoop distribution.
