We just passed Labour Day so it’s back to the grind for everyone.

And what better way to start September than with a new SQL-on-Hadoop engine. It’s Vora, courtesy of SAP.

There’s already some detail available though my contacts at SAP have been more terse to date.

It was built by the same team that built HANA though Vora emphasizes a scale-out (vs HANA’s scale-up) approach.

Its raison d’etre is as an in-memory query engine running within the Spark execution framework. How it compares to Spark SQL is the open question.

Strata this month should be revealing with another major player offering another SQL-on-Hadoop engine. How many more engine can this market support?
