Back to the future…20 years after the original development of ODBC, Simba offers new connectivity for Microsoft’s Hadoop/Hive Solution
San Jose, Calif. – Hadoop Summit – June 26th, 2013 – Simba Technologies, the industry’s Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) expert for Big Data solutions, announced today that it will provide ODBC access to Windows Azure HDInsight, Microsoft’s 100% Apache compatible Hadoop-based solution. Simba’s Apache Hive ODBC Driver with SQL Connector provides customers easy access to their data for Business Intelligence (BI) and analytics using the SQL-based application of their choice. Under the agreement, Microsoft BI and HDInsight customers will have access rights to the connector.
- Enables BI tools such as Microsoft Excel, Alteryx, Tableau, SAP BusinessObjects, Crystal Reports and countless others to access HDInsight, Microsoft’s Hadoop-based solution
- Enables Microsoft BI tools to connect via ODBC to Hadoop/Hive clusters including those from Apache, Datastax, Cloudera, Hortonworks, Intel, MapR
ODBC is the most common data interface used by BI, data analysis and reporting applications. The ODBC 3.52 specification – on which Simba’s Apache Hive ODBC Driver with SQL Connector is fully compliant – is the foundation for standards-based access. Simba Technologies developed ODBC 1992 in collaboration with Microsoft and has been the most commonly used API for SQL ever since.
Unlike other drivers for Hive, Simba’s Apache Hive ODBC Driver with SQL Connector performs the added task of mapping standard SQL-92 to HiveQL—thereby seamlessly integrating data residing in Hadoop with any SQL-based applications.
“Simba’s Apache Hive ODBC Driver with SQL Connector is based upon the latest ODBC standard, opening up the entire ecosystem of SQL-based applications to access and analyze Big Data in Hadoop,” said Amyn Rajan, Simba’s CEO. “ODBC connectivity to the Microsoft HDInsight Hadoop-based solution makes data accessible to enterprise users, using proven tools found in the data scientist’s and business user’s BI toolbox. We look forward to the success of this renewed strategic relationship.”
HDInsight is Microsoft’s 100% Apache compatible Hadoop-based solution, supported by Microsoft. HDInsight empowers organizations with new insights on unstructured data, while connecting to the most widely used Business Intelligence (BI) tools.
“Windows Azure HDInsight is designed to support a wide range of big data applications,” said Herain Oberoi, director Server and Tools Marketing at Microsoft. “Simba’s Hive ODBC connectors enable BI users of all levels to easily access Hadoop data on Windows Azure.
